“Always leave enough room in your life to do something that makes you happy, satisfied, or even joyous”-Paul Hawken

In our current culture we are great at making excuses not to do what this quote is asking of us.  “I don’t have time because…,” there always seems to be something that prevents us from doing what we really want whether it be work, families or life that happens at the most inconvenient times.  The reality is, there is time…we all have the same 24hrs a day, however we all use it differently.  Carving out a moment for ourselves to breathe and just be is not something that can be put aside.  Research tells us that in order to lessen depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc. being present and doing what we enjoy is imperative to our health.  So what keeps us from giving ourselves time when it seems like everything and everyone else around us gets it instead?

I hear from clients a lot of the time that there is an element of guilt for taking care of themselves.  In order to be a better partner, parent or employee, self-care will allow you to become mentally healthier and focused in the areas of your life that matter most.  Find the parts in your day that do not hold the most meaning to your personal joy and simply replace them with something for you whether it be 10 minutes of meditation, a hobby or a walk.  Be present in that moment, enjoy yourself and separate from any distractions.  What brings you joy matters, there is a need for you to prioritize yourself as the payoff will not only benefit you, but also everyone around you.  Embrace a moment this week and enjoy!
