Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. We cannot get or give more time in the logical sense, however we can give ourselves more time by saying “no” to things we do not want to do or changing the focus in our head. Anxiety lives in our past, whispering to us that “we could’ve done better,” or processing moments such as…”I remember him saying this before I got upset…” Anxiety lives in our future…”I know she’s going to forget to bring what I asked” or “I’m never going to do as well as I should.” In reality, the thoughts of the past are not doing us any good now and the future thoughts are only assumptions or expectations.
Anxiety dwells in the past and in the future, but in the present you are free! My clients who work on anxiety find that when they withdraw their past and future thinking they have more time, more energy and more focus on the present. This present energy is what results in happiness and lets go of the pressure and expectations that only you have created for yourself. The challenge this week is to catch those past and future thinking thoughts and bring yourself back to the present. When the thoughts keep coming, especially if it’s a habit, keep reminding yourself that you will focus on the present and keep at it. You are really giving yourself the gift of time and letting go!
